TIME Magazine has named India’s former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi and freedom fighter Amrit Kaur among 100 greatest women of the year. TIME has created 100 coves for 100 women from 1920 to 2020.
TIME has named Amrit Kaur as the women of the year for 1947 and Indira Gandhi for 1976. TIME has recreated special covers and dedicated each year to a woman who made an impression in that particular year.

TIME Magazine has named Indira Gandhi as the women of the year for 1976. TIME mentioned that Indira Gandhi became India’s great authoritarian in 1976. She became the Prime Minister of India after victory over Pakistan in Bangladesh Liberation War. TIME Magazine also wrote that Indira Gandhi had amended the constitution to give herself more powers.
TIME Magazine informed on a page dedicated to the Indira Gandhi that she jailed several politicians, censored the press of the country and smother fundamental rights of the people. She declared an emergency in 1975. TIME article informs that, the electricity was suddenly shut off in entire Delhi’s media office on June 25, 1975.
Amrit Kaur as Women of the year 1947
According to the information, provided by TIME magazine, Rajkumari Amrit Kaur was born in the royal family of Kapurthala. She completed her education in Edwardian England but she dedicated her life to help India free from England’s rule. TIME magazine said that she returned to India in 1918 after studying at Oxford and followed Mahatma Gandhi’s teachings.
In 1930, Amrit Kaur became Mahatma Gandhi’s secretary while tackling social issues and raising voice for women’s education. She was the first woman health minister of India after Independence. She served the post for the next 10 years. Amrit Kaur founded the Indian Council for Child Welfare and helped the government to establish several hospitals and medical colleges.

TIME said that it has been given 'Man of the Year' title for 72 years. It was always a man on the cover. In 1999, 'Man of the Year' was converted into the 'Person of the Year' for making it equal for men and women.
